Welcome to the Leicestershire Active Travel Alliance

We’re a county‑wide network of residents, campaigners and professionals working for safer, quieter, healthier streets and communities.

Why active travel?

Because it means safer, quieter, healthier streets and communities — where children can walk or wheel to school, high streets feel alive, buses run on time, and neighbours actually meet on their pavements.

What’s happening in Leicestershire (and why it matters)

  • We walk, wheel and cycle less than average. That means poorer health outcomes and more congestion than we need to tolerate.
  • Travel plans aren’t delivering. Too many major employers and developers promise “sustainable travel” on paper — and then traffic still grows.
  • New developments = more traffic unless we plan differently. Upcoming local plans must lock in good routes from day one (schools, shops, stations, jobs).
  • Pavement parking is degrading our communities. It blocks prams and mobility aids, pushes people into the road, and erodes the feel of our streets.

We’re here to change that — by pushing for joined‑up planning, safe everyday routes, and measurable delivery (not just glossy strategies).

What we’re doing

  • Helping residents and parish groups make the case for safe school‑run routes and local connections.
  • Scrutinising planning applications and travel plans so they deliver real mode shift.
  • Tracking LCWIPs and funding decisions across the county and districts.
  • Sharing evidence, toolkits and examples that work in places like ours.

Broader topics we’re discussing (for those who want the bigger picture)

  • Integrating buses and rail so public transport works as one coherent network.
  • Where light rail and “very light rail” might (and might not) fit in a county like ours.
  • National school‑run initiatives and what we can copy locally.
  • E‑scooter policy, trials and practical lessons for safer shared spaces.
  • 📰 Read our latest observations and updates → News

Get involved

  • Report a local issue (dangerous junction, missing link, pavement parking hotspot).
  • Join a campaign cell (school routes, new developments, LCWIP delivery, buses).
  • Share data or skills (GIS, planning, design, community organising, comms).
